OVERVIEW

A large automotive OEM that is listed as a Fortune 500 company approached TMP Technologies with a need for an applicator that was part of a car repair kit. The applicator needed to evenly disperse a compound that fixed scratches, dents and chips in a car’s paint. There were two major factors that TMP successfully satisfied: 1.) The platform for the applicator needed to be sturdy and reusable. 2.) The material used to evenly spread the compound needed to be durable yet disposable.

Conclusion

The Fortune 500 automotive OEM needed a device that would evenly spread a rubbing compound across an unsightly dent or scratch. What TMP provided was a full service, customization process delivering a custom applicator that met the customer’s requirements exceeding their expectations.

Qualifying Materials

The pad material could not degrade, be absorbent and must be able to generously apply the compound on the body of an automobile. The TMP research and design team was able to quickly eliminate most porous foams and qualify the proper material. A polyurethane foam pad was decided to be the best solution for application, longevity and cost since it needed to be disposable.

Prototyping

What kind of platform would be strong enough to hold the foam pad, withstand regular use and wear and tear, be comfortable in the end-user’s hand, while maintaining a competitive cost point? A vacuum formed plastic handle satisfied all of the automotive OEM’s specifications. A custom hook and loop system was developed to adhere the foam pad to the plastic handle. It was strong enough to hold the pad in place but loose enough that the pad could be removed without causing harm or damage.

Equipment Build Out

Since the design of the vacuum molded handle was new, custom equipment and machinery needed to be built in order to create the applicator. A mold was manufactured to create the handle. A full machine line with unique featuring equipment was designed and built at TMP to produce and assemble the component.
